Vern Eugene Smith, 86, of Shippenville passed away on December 10, 2015 after a lengthy illness.
Born on December 1, 1929 in Union City, PA he was the son of Albert Vern and Mildred Bartholme Smith.
On June 30, 1956 he was married to the former Edna Dean Smith who survives.
Vern was a member of the Shippenville United Methodist Church.
He served in the United States Army for three years during the Korean conflict.
Vern served with the Pennsylvania State Police for 30 years obtaining the rank of Sargent prior to his retirement in July of 1982. In 1986 he was elected Clarion County Sheriff and served 4 consecutive terms prior to his retirement from public service in January 2002. In 1996 Vern also served as the President of the Pennsylvania Sheriffs Association.
In his free time Vern enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson and working on his stone carvings. He also enjoyed spending time in the outdoors including fishing and hunting.
He was also a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge #277 in Clarion, and he was a member of the Forest-Venango-Clarion Farm Bureau.
He is survived by his wife Edna, his son Kyle and his wife Lori (McEntire), his daughter Karla and her husband James (Koenig), his grandson Travis and his wife Sarah (Weaver) and his granddaughter Kylynn. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, and his dog Torie.
Vern was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers Norman, Paul, and Jack.
Friends will be received at the Shippenville United Methodist Church in Shippenville on Saturday, December 12, 2015 from 9am to 12pm.
A Memorial Service will be held at 12 pm on Saturday, December 12, 2105 at the Shippenville United Methodist Church in Shippenville, with Rev. Keith Diehl , Pastor of the Church presiding.
