John A. Lewis, 89, of Shippenville passed away May 6, 2016 at the Clarion Hospital with his family at his side.
Born on August 7, 1926 in Pine City and he was the son of Scott and Leona Rex Lewis.
John attended the Pine City School through the 8th grade and then went on to graduate from the Shippenville School.
He was married to Lorraine Beals who preceded him in death. On January 26, 1956 John was married to the former Sara “Sally” Hanst Lewis who survives. This past January they celebrated their 60th Anniversary.
John worked in the coal industry his entire life. His last two employments were with Zuck Coal Company and Ancient Sun Coal Company, from which he retired. Outside of work he enjoyed riding four wheeler and snowmobile, gardening and hunting.
He was a Mason in the Edenburg Lodge 0550 and the Coudersport Consistory; he was also a member of the Knox American Legion Post 720, the Servicemen's Club of Knox, Clarion County Rod &Gun Club, Pennsylvania Sheriff's Association, Ducks Unlimited, and the National Rifle Asscoaition.
John served in the U.S. Navy on the submarine U.S.S. Chanticleer in WWII as a diver.
John is survived by his wife of 60 years Sara and their children: Jacqueline (Jack) Deitz of Tionesta, Linda (Chuck) Rex of Tionesta, Dr. John A. (Malia) Lewis Jr. of Indiana PA, David (Jacqueline) Lewis of Shippenville, and Holly (Greg) Weaver of Lucinda. Grandchildren surviving include Caroline (Sam) Griebel, Elaine Thompson, Jason Deitz, Corey Rex, Melinda Lewis, Marcus and Ashten Lewis, and Chase and Kain Weaver. Great-Grandchildren surviving are Sam Griebel and Merisa Thompson. A sister Mary (Ray) Rex of Shippenville, brothers Scott Lewis of Shippenville and Charles “Lindy” Lewis of Kittanning, sister-in-law Esther “Et” Lewis of Shippenville and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by a son Mark E. Lewis in October 1983, a brother Otis Lewis, sister and brother in law Esther and Donald Strotman, a sister-in-laws Jane Lewis and Martha “Til” Lewis.
Friends will be received at the Faller Funeral Home, Inc. in Fryburg on Monday, May 9, 2016 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm.
Funeral service will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at Faller Funeral Home, Inc. in Fryburg, with Pastor Calvin Cook, of Pine City United Methodist Church presiding. Interment will be in the Venus Cemetery.
