Dorothy Jane Horner, 92, of Tionesta, passed away January 24, 2011 in Clermont, Florida.
Born June 17th, 1918, in Jennerstown, PA, she was the daughter of the late Frank J. and Stella V. Barnett Fisher.
Dorothy was married May 10, 1940 to Clyde E. Horner; who survives, in a double wedding with her late sister Helen and Charles Corbett, formerly of Hooversville, PA. The ceremony took place at Christ Lutheran Church in Jennerstown.
Dorothy is a high school graduate and a graduate of Cambria-Rowe Business College, Johnstown, PA. After graduation she worked for Penn-Traffic in Johnstown.
Dorothy was a very devoted and loving mother, grandmother, homemaker and business partner. She and Clyde founded Long Acres Potato Farms in 1955 in Stoystown, Somerset County before moving to Clarion County in 1967. The three-generation farming operation produces and sells potatoes and grain on 2700 acres. Dorothy served many roles in the family business from grading, selling and delivering potatoes to bookkeeping and strategic planning.
Dorothy was extremely proud of her family and employees and was happiest when surrounded by them. She will forever be remembered for her kindness, practicality, devotion, and love of education. She enjoyed playing organ and will be remembered for being gracious, courteous and always a lady. She enjoyed traveling, visiting several foreign countries and all 50 states. She especially enjoyed spending the winter in Kissimmee, Florida with her loving husband of 70 years.
She was a committed member of Faith Lutheran Church and Faith Women’s Circle in Venus, PA. Dorothy was also very active in Farm Bureau Advisory Council and Women’s Committee.
She is survived by two children and their spouses: Donald J. Horner and wife Ethel (Shockey), of Tionesta; and Doris J. Beck and husband Clarence, of Tionesta.
Dorothy will be deeply missed by her 5 grandchildren and spouses: Rhonda Bendal and husband Larry of Tionesta; Douglas Horner of Orlando, FL; Janeen Leon and husband Carlos of Strongsville, OH; Dr. Janice Dunkle and husband John of Sigel; and Bryan Beck and wife Heidi of Tionesta; ten great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her brother John David Fisher and sister Helen Corbett.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 & 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at the Faller Funeral Home in Fryburg.
Funeral Services and Liturgy will be conducted at Faith Lutheran Church, Venus, on Thursday, January 27, 2011 at 11 a.m. Rev. John A. Wood will officiate. Friends will also be received on Friday, January 28, 2011 at 10 a.m. at the Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home on 494 West Main Street, in Somerset, PA. Internment will be at 11:30 a.m follow the viewing on Friday at the Somerset Memorial Park, 104 New Centerville Road, Somerset, PA. Rev John A. Wood will be officiating along with nephew Dr. William Stotler.
Charitable donations may be made in Dorothy’s memory to the Faith Lutheran Church in Venus.
